Concept Art + Narrative
Hello, I am Isabella, and I was fortunate to work on the concept art and narrative of the game. Firstly, I was tasked with creating concept art of the office space and Dreamscape, so I got to work on them early in the project’s creation. We wanted the office space to have a mundane boring vibe with an old 80’s computer and a beige colour palette. I wanted the office space to be quite compact and uninteresting so that the player would want to spend most of their time in Dreamscape. Furthermore, I wanted Dreamscape to feel a lot more dreamlike and whimsical, with-it having differences from the real world. I thought it would be cool if we had upside down trees and eyeball plants. I wanted to create a dreamy atmosphere that reflects our real-life dreams, where the rules of reality do not apply, and everything feels a bit off or different from our world.
I was also tasked with the character design of the office worker or the "Deleted User" and the shadowy figures that inhabit the dreamworld. The character design went through a few iterations, but I settled on the one with the ram horns because I thought it looked the most unique and visually appealing. I also wanted the sprites to have the same outfit as the 3D model Sam would make to reflect that these office workers are all the same people in the eyes of the experiment. The character design of the office worker took me quite a while to draw as I had to draw two different views of him and make sure that the anatomy was decent. It was a helpful experience though, as I got to practice how to design characters and draw anatomy
As well as concept art and sprite creation, I also helped with the narrative and the dialogue of the game. Cillian produced the initial idea of the game, and I suggested some ideas that I thought would aid the idea and would improve the narrative. When we had a more concrete idea for the story, I created a word document with a plot summary, a story order, and the actual dialogue. Unfortunately, my dialogue didn't make it into the game but some of the initial concepts I created were re-adapted,
Although we did not have much time towards the end of the assignment, we produced a cool concept that I would love to revisit later. I am also happy with the work I contributed.
